Greta Gerwig's "Lady Bird"

I couldn't wait, so I saw "Lady Bird" tonight - Greta Gerwig's valentine to Sacramento. I saw the 8 p.m. show, and was shocked by how many people were there at the Tower Theater - sold out, with about 90% of all the seats occupied. I've never seen that before!

We were all unnerved by a hall-of-mirrors effect when the Tower Theater itself made a brief cameo, since we were all inside the Tower Theater.

The film describes a parallel Sacramento universe to the one I was in in 2002 - at once, both familiar and alien. I found myself tearing up at unexpected times. It was wonderful seeing Erik Daniells on the big screen!

The audience gave a rousing round of applause at the end. There was a pocket of applause during credits - likely a party of folks involved in the actual film-making.

Since my Sacramento universe is so much different than Greta's I think I should write a Sacramento screenplay. Maybe have my universe intersect momentarily with hers - matter and antimatter - and blow both universes into smithereens.




I was pleased Greta featured Thrift Town, but used the time there to shop for a dress. Not my experience. This is my memory.

I saw the movie a second time, and realized Sabrina Schloss is in it too. She did shows at DMTC a decade ago.

This book outlines thirty-three circuits that the avid fan can travel in order to visit up to 679 different filming locations for "Breaking Bad" and "Better Call Saul" in the Albuquerque area.  Some background is provided for each site, including other movies that might have also used the site for filming.

Purchase book at the link.                                                                                                        “‘Breaking Bad’ Signs and Symbols,” aims to understand some of the symbolism embedded in the backgrounds of “Breaking Bad” and “Better Call Saul,” in order to decode messages and stories Vince Gilligan and crew have hidden there.                                                                                                    A series of tables are used to isolate how certain (particularly architectural) features are used: Gentle Arches, Tin Ceilings, Five-Pointed Stars, Octagons, etc. Daylighting innovations that were either pioneered or promoted in Chicago are examined: Glass Block Windows, Luxfer Prismatic Tile Windows, and Plate Glass Windows.

Certain symbols advance the plot: foreshadowing symbols like Pueblo Deco Arches, or danger symbols like bell shapes and stagger symbols. Other features, like Glass Block Windows or Parallel Beams in the Ceiling, tell stories about the legacies and corruptions of modernity, particularly those best-displayed at Chicago’s “Century of Progress” (1933-34). 

In addition, a number of scenes in the show are modeled after Early Surrealist artworks. The traces of various artists can be tracked in both shows, including: Comte de Lautréamont, Giorgio De Chirico, Man Ray, Max Ernst, Leonora Carrington, René Magritte, Toyen, Yves Tanguy, Remedios Varo, Paul Klee, and in particular, Salvador Dalí.

A teen opened fire at an elementary school in Townville, S.C., wounding a teacher and two students after allegedly killing his father. (One student has since succumb to their injuries) The shooter is in custody, and the sheriff’s department gave a brief press conference as per usual for shootings like this. However, when discussing whether this could be called terrorism, Captain Garland Major gave a frankly disgusting reason for why this couldn’t be terrorism:

“The students were both white males. The teacher was a white female. The shooter is a white male. There is no racial undertone, no terrorism involved.”

There are several overlapping points to consider in this account. The first and most important is that we should not take anything Veselnitskaya says at face value. Our best understanding is that she is part of a Russian intelligence influence operation. The point of these efforts is not just to make deals or help friends. It is to get control. That means compromising people. It is hard to see this statement on her part as anything but an implicit threat. If what she is saying is true, Veselnitskaya is describing the clearest example to date of a proposed quid pro quo between the Trump campaign and the Russian government. A plain reading of her claim is that he was suggesting that if they could produce real evidence against Clinton, a future Trump administration could help with sanctions relief.

FLDS Chaos in Northern Mexico

The local Mennonites probably had no clue:
Police raided three houses and two ranches belonging to Orson William Black Jr, 56, who is wanted on charges of child abuse in the US.

Prosecutors say he is also a suspect in the killing of three US citizens in the area in September.

Twenty-six other people living on the properties were also detained.

The arrests come less than two months after 23-year-old Jesse Barlow and brothers Robert and Michael Black, aged 19 and 15 respectively, were shot dead at Rancho El Negro.

It is not clear if they were relatives or followers of Mr Black, or if they had been taken to the property against their will.

The ranches are located in a colony set up by a Mennonite Christian group in 1922.

After fleeing the United States in 2003, Orson William Black Jr settled in the colony, where he is believed to have set up his own polygamous sect, set apart from the Mennonite group living there.

The nature of the dispute between Paul and Boucher remained a mystery Sunday to locals who know both men as medical professionals based in this southwestern Kentucky town.

Paul is an ophthalmologist who has practiced in town since moving here with his wife in 1993. He continues to provide free medical care to low-income Kentucky residents on a regular basis throughout the year when the Senate is not in session.

Boucher is an anesthesiologist and the inventor of the Therm-a-Vest, a cloth vest partly filled with rice and secured with Velcro straps that is designed to help with back pain. He has worked at several local medical facilities through the years, according to public health records.

...A motive is not known, and there is no indication that the attack was political in nature.

Jeff Jones, a registered nurse who worked with Boucher at the Bowling Green Medical Center, described Boucher’s politics as “liberal.”

“He was active on social media and said some negative things about the Republican agenda,” Jones said.

“I think it was unfortunate that they lived so close together,” he added.

Morrissey Accused of Asexual Harassment

I like Morrissey well enough, but I like the satire too:
LOS ANGELES — Dozens of victims came forward this past weekend with completely nonsexual harassment accusations against iconic singer Morrissey.

Nikita Whelms, a stagehand at Riot Fest in 2016, was the first in the still-growing line of men and women to come forward.

“To Morrissey, I was a ‘vapid bore of staggering insignificance’ just because I asked if he wanted a bottle of water,” said Whelms in a social media post that has since gone viral. “He hurt me with that remark, as he has hurt many others. I encourage all victims of Morrissey’s asexual, but nonetheless dehumanizing, verbal assault to step forward.”

Dozens of former staff, baristas, hair stylists, and customer service representatives have since come forward with similar accusations. Leslie Burnham, a bartender in Los Angeles, recounted a particularly gruesome encounter with the aging pop icon lacking any sexual undertones.

“He came into the bar once — literally nose in the air — and asked me about the bacon smell. When I told him we sell burgers, he said, ‘Only a mentally deficient monster of absolutely no moral fiber or substance would work here,’” said Burnham at a press conference, surrounded by family and loved ones. “He left without once looking at me. At least when some jerk says, ‘You got a nice ass,’ an acknowledgment of your existence is involved. Morrissey treated me as if I was less than human.”

'Russian Trolls' Promoted California Independence

The California independence movement has been spearheaded by a group called Yes California. One of the group's co-founders, Louis Marinelli, opened a self-styled California embassy in Moscow, and later moved to Siberia.

Marinelli attended a conference of Western secession movements in 2016, along with representatives from similar groups from Texas, Puerto Rico and Northern Ireland. The conference was organised by the Anti-Globalisation Movement, a group that has received money from the Russian government, according to Casey Michel, a reporter for the left-wing news site ThinkProgress.

"It had received funding from the Kremlin to organise this conference to pay for the travel and lodging of American and European secession movements," Michel says.

Marinelli denies any links to the Kremlin or receiving any money from the Russian government. He tells Trending he now plans to return to the United States and rejoin the independence movement which he co-founded.

Months (or years) from now, just before trial, Trump issues some tweets to the effect of This is all an attack by Hillary Clinton supporters!, and he pardons Manafort and anybody else who has been indicted by Mueller. If Mueller then brings Manafort before the Grand Jury and demands he answer questions because he no longer has any legitimate fear of federal prosecution because of his pardon, Manafort will take the Fifth because he is still subject to criminal liability in New York State, where much of the money laundering occurred. Manafort’s assertion of the privilege will be upheld because Trump’s pardon affected only federal charges.

Brazile and the Sanders-Clinton Kerfuffle

I suspect that what’s going with Brazile’s reveal is that the DNC and the Democratic Party hierarchy has decided to join the Progressives. The 2020 game is afoot. Brazile has decided to proceed, with the best and most-honorable of intentions, by telling the Sanders' folks that "they were right all along" about Hillary. If Brazile had to walk back or otherwise disavow her comments, she could easily do so later, once people stopped paying attention. Instead, a huge fight erupted.

Now Donna B tells her critics to shut up - a bit high handed - then says she did not say the primaries were rigged, but rather, Clinton had undue influence. And this agreement at the center of it all states that it applies to the general election only, not the primaries, and shouldn’t be construed as to show bias. So what Donna B said has either been exaggerated or misreported, or she is currently in the process of changing her story. In any event, there are reasons to worry about the DNC, but this agreement is not one of them.

Even though this agreement was signed in September, 2015, the memo is clear that it refers to the general election, and that there might be other agreements with other candidates (such as with Sanders) later. Indeed, Sanders had his own agreement - less specific - with the DNC. Nevertheless, the influence Hillary was exerting was informal, and more subtle. Basically, Hillary was paying the DNC's bills. The DNC wasn't going to favor Sanders in the primaries if it might cross Hillary - after all, they rely on her.

This kind of situation reminds me of sporting events. In 2002, the Sacramento Kings battled the LA Lakers in the Western Playoffs, and the refs weren't calling obvious fouls. The refs were sending the message to the Kings: "don't ask us to help you win - if you want to be champions, you have to outscore the Lakers." The refs did not have to be told that, in the West, the Lakers ruled. The Lakers were paying far more than their share of the NBA's expenses. The refs weren't to shut down the NBA Finals gravy train early unless they were absolutely forced to do so. A similar message from the DNC here.

This situation where the candidate controls the national committee, rather than vice versa, has been getting worse and worse since the introduction of televised campaigning - since 1956, or so.

I like this analysis of the DNC's woes:
The moral implosion that Brazile describes was the tragic result of a bunch of more or less decent people with more or less honorable intentions struggling to deal with a long chain of unintended consequences stemming from decisions they hadn’t made.

Even Debbie Wasserman Schultz, America’s Most Kickable, wasn’t personally responsible for the way Barack Obama regally ignored the Democratic Party for eight years, leaving it, Brazile says, with $25 million in debt, not to mention wiped off the political map in virtually every state that doesn’t touch a large body of water. For that matter, it wasn’t Obama who decided that the working class and the welfare state were yesterday's news and turned the Democrats into the party of “The End of History,” embracing Silicon Valley venture capital and deep-pockets Hollywood donors (cough, cough, Weinstein) and deregulated Wall Street derivatives that nobody could understand but were sure to keep going up, up, up. That particular maneuver paid off big time for Bill Clinton in the '90s -- and has been poisonous ever since.

The net result of all this has been highly anomalous, if not unique in political history: On one hand we have a party that nominally stands for principles and policies supported by a majority of the population, whose nominee has won the popular vote in six of the last seven presidential elections. On the other we have a party that has lost close to 1,000 state legislature seats over the past decade and suffered historic wipeouts in the last two midterm elections, leaving it in a weaker position on Capitol Hill than at any time since the Great Depression. That party became so strapped for cash, not to mention so spiritually enervated, that it rented itself out to one of its presidential candidates while pretending to remain neutral with respect to that candidate’s campaign. Spoiler alert: Same party!

A Mania For Raking Leaves, and Thinking About Challenging the White Whale

Sorry for the light posting. I've been busy. Raking, trimming, and going up and down ladders.

For the last several years, all around the property, I've eased off on trimming tree branches, hedges, rose bushes, and the like. The reason was that I feared killing the plants in the most-brutal California drought in 1,200 years. Last year, we had nearly-normal rainfall (91%), so I tried getting more aggressive, but then fell off a 12-foot fiberglass folding ladder - at one point, I was holding on a Fiskars cutter while dangling from a tree limb before falling onto the fallen ladder and a bunch of lethal agaves. Amazingly, I was virtually-unhurt, but I got ladder-shy, so I laid off on the trimming for the rest of the year. Poor ladder - it was twisted, damaged, and almost ruined.

This year, I untwisted the ladder, and set it up again. It's wonky, twistable, but serviceable. Still, I have to be careful, and make sure the ladder is on a completely-stable surface before climbing.

The tree and hedge canopies are damned mangy, so there's lots to do. Plus, I can't endure the thought of uncollected leaves piling up, and many leaves are falling. I "borrow" my neighbor's garden refuse bins in order to deal with the mania. Damn it, I just heard another leaf fall.

Once concern, for years now, has been the big tree branch growing over the house. I couldn't quite reach it as it grew, and it grew and grew. I agonized as it added weight. The whole tree is leaning towards the house, and it weighs ten bajillion pounds.

Now, however, the tree branch is bending with the weight to the point I can reach it, but if I cut it where I can reach it, a ridiculous amount of weight will fall directly onto the house. So, I want to slowly dismantle the hard-to-reach outer branches first, but without unnecessarily endangering my safety on the tall, perilously-pitched roof. What can possibly go wrong? This is my "white whale." Do I have the balls for this? Or do I puss out and call a professional?

"The Florida Project"

Last Wednesday, I went to Sacramento's Tower Theater and saw "The Florida Project," a portal into the world of Florida Trash: specifically, life with single moms at a budget motel near a major theme park. The acting was great (notably Willem Dafoe, and people like Brooklynn Prince as the little girl, but I also liked Bria Vinaite as the Bad Mom). What I really liked, though, was the kids' trippy journey through the fantastical architecture of the commercial strip: tomorrow's archaeology, alive today. (And it's a real place too: Magic Castle Inn and Suites, Kissimmee, FL.)

I notice some critics don't like the ending. Too concepty. I loved the ending, though.
